What is a mammogram?

Mammography is one of the most accurate tests for any changes in the breasts, and the best test to detect breast cancer at an early stage.

A mammogram is an x-ray test that can detect a lump, small or big, before you or your doctor can.

When is the best time to do a mammogram?

  • It is best to do a mammogram directly after your menstrual cycle (before the mid of the next cycle). Avoid the last two weeks of the coming period because hormonal changes may affect your breasts.
  • In case of amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) or menopause, you can do the test at the same time every one or two years, according to your age group.
  • It is not recommended to perform the mammogram while you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Consult your doctor if you have any signs, symptoms, or changes that bother you.
  • If you have any family history of breast cancer or other breast problems, you should talk to your doctor about your risk factors to determine the starting age and frequency of your mammograms.

How do you prepare for a mammogram?

  • Bring all of your previous mammogram results, if you have done any.
  • It is recommended that you take a shower on the day of your mammogram, and do not use deodorants, perfumes or body lotions as these might affect the quality of the mammogram.
  • You will have to undress the upper part of the body, so wear something suitable.
  • The technician will tell you how to stand in front of the mammogram device. Each breast will be examined separately.
  • The breast will be placed on the machine and will then be pressed a little bit.
  • You might experience some discomfort, but this is necessary to get a high-quality mammogram.
  • It is very important to follow the procedure and remain still with minimal movement.
