Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) is a test done at the doctor’s office and should be performed on every female starting at the age of 20. CBE should be done on a regular basis.

What does the doctor do during a CBE?

Asks about your history to assess any risk factors
Runs through the various steps involved in CBE
Answers any questions you may have about breast health

What steps come before CBE?

You can ask a family member or a friend to accompany you for the test
The test is performed in a private room
You will undress the upper part of your body

Which area will the doctor or nurse examine?

They will examine the whole breast area, starting from the wishbone until the end of the sternum, in addition to your underarm area.

CBE Steps

While lying down:

Your doctor will examine the breast tissue using the pads of the three middle fingers.
Your doctor will use light, medium and deep pressure to examine all tissue layers. You may experience slight discomfort, but this test is very important.

At the end of the test:

Your doctor will explain to you how to examine your breasts, and what you should feel, which will help detect if anything is ever abnormal.

You should discuss your follow-up plan with your doctor.
